The Second Annual Frederick Robie Cup Spelling Bee – October 23rd, 2010

September 16, 2010

Here’s the buzz on the BEE…….

We are very excited to be in the midst of planning for our second annual spelling bee. This event was an absolute blast last year, and raised almost $6,000 for GEF!  We want to keep the momentum for this event going, and we’d love for you and your friends, co-workers, or neighbors to be a part of it!   We have spent a great deal of time thinking about last year’s launch of this event, and what we can do to make this year even better for bee participants and audience members.  We hope that you will join us by putting together a team (three people) to participate in the event, buying tickets so that you can come to the event to support your favorite team(s), or by donating an item to our silent auction.

The bee will be held on Saturday, October 23rd at the Old Robie School ( the big white building right after the entrance to Little Falls Rec. area).  Check in and refreshments will begin at 6:30, with the bee starting promptly at 7:00.  Team members are encouraged to come with a great sense of fun, and wearing their most creative team “uniform”.

Tickets for audience members can be obtained from GEF (call us at 222-1009, or shoot us an email at gorhamef.org), and at various locations around Gorham TBD.  The price for tickets is $10, and the price for entering a team is $150.

Team registration information and bee rules can be found under the GEF EVENTS tab (under Spelling Bee in the dropdown menu).

Thanks for your support and we hope to see you at the bee!

Our Fall Grant Recipients

February 6, 2010

GEF awarded two grants during its new Fall grant cycle! The awards totaled $2,320 to benefit programs in the Gorham schools.

The grant recipients are:

• Chuck Peters and Aaron Landry at Gorham High School – $1,120 to purchase equipment to complete and implement a microscopic digital photography project that will allow students to make detailed observations of, and digitally document, microorganisms in student-constructed Living Machines.

• Ray Mathieu and Matt Murray at Gorham High School – $1,200 to bring composer Samuel Hazo to Gorham High School as Composer in Residence for Instrumental and Vocal Music, who will work with students in performance technique and composition, and to rehearse an original piece that was performed for the public on December 20.

“The day with Sam Hazo was intense and exciting, rehearsals leading up to the concert were done with great anticipation, and the performance was superb. The entire process was certainly one that our students will always remember as part of the outstanding and balanced education they received at GHS,” said Gorham High School teacher Ray Mathieu, the co-recipient of a $1,200 grant.

In its three years of existence, GEF has awarded 20 grants totaling nearly $18,000 to programs in the Gorham schools, supporting the arts, literacy, technology, science and civic learning in grades K-12.

GEF’s Spring grant cycle will begin in March, with grant applications accepted between March 15 and April 15, 2010. Applications will be available online by February 22, 2010. Check back then.

Galaxy of STARS

December 27, 2009

Gorham’s teachers and school staff are STARS! We can prove it. Check out our STARS pages for the teachers you have nominated for our School Teachers Are Really Special program over the last 3 years. This year, building adminstrators have allowed us to hang the stars each teacher receives in the school lobby so we all can enjoy the Galaxy of Gorham Star teachers! You can nominate any teacher or school staff member for a star right here on our website. Go to the STARS pull down menu to access the appropriate page.

And the winners are……

Sara Nelson, Kathy Garrard and Kristine Biegle celebrate their victory.

Sara Nelson, Kathy Garrard and Kristine Biegle celebrate their victory.

The Queen Bees, 3 former GEF officers and board members, were the champion spellers Saturday night at the first annual Frederick Robie Cup Adult Spelling Bee!!! Kristine Biegel, Sara Nelson, and Kathy Garrard battled their way to victory against 10 other formidable opponent teams. Other teams of note: The LL Bean “Oh Bee-have” team came in second and won the prize for the most money raised for GEF, Heartwood Ortographobists won for first team finally eliminated (although several other teams were initially eliminated but were able to get back in the game), and Morgan Dental Care won the “Ted Sharp Bow Tie Award” for the best team costume. All the teams were skilled, competitive and wonderfully good sports, not to mention incredibly generous. Our panel consisting of Matt Mattingly as word caller, Matt Robinson as judge, and Dennis Libby as Timekeeper were hilarious and able to get the crowd involved, contributing to an uproariously good time.

The final tally is not yet in, but preliminary results indicate that through generous community support, we raised in excess of $5,000 for GEF programming! Thank you to all who made this possible. We will be posting a complete list of sponsors, donors and participants later this week.

Awesome!
